Celebrex is a prescription medication that contains the active ingredient Celecoxib. It belongs to the family of medicines known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It works to relieve pain and reduce inflammation (swelling). Celebrex is a selective COX-2 inhibitor (inhibiting the body's production of prostaglandins, which are chemicals in the body that cause pain, swelling and fever). Celebrex reduces the production of prostaglandins by inhibiting the activity of COX-2. By blocking the COX-2 activity, Celebrex reduces the production of prostaglandins, thereby reducing the swelling and pain caused by these conditions.
Celebrex is used to relieve pain (swelling and pain associated with a painful condition), to reduce the inflammation (swelling and redness) and swelling, as well as to reduce the risk of side effects (such as bleeding, bruising, and swollen legs and stomach). It is also used to reduce the risk of stomach ulcers and gastrointestinal problems caused by NSAIDs. Celebrex is not recommended for use in the treatment of osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and in patients with a history of arthritis. It should be used with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal problems, especially when they are taking other medicines that affect the GI tract such as digoxin (a medicine used to treat heart problems).
The dosage of Celebrex varies depending on the patient's condition and the severity of the symptoms. Do not take Celebrex more than once a day. Patients with a history of allergic reactions to Celebrex or other NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen or naproxen) should use caution in taking this medicine. Patients with known or suspected allergic reactions to other NSAIDs, such as aspirin, ibuprofen and diclofenac, may need different amounts of Celebrex depending on their allergies. Do not use Celebrex if you are taking oral aspirin or other NSAIDs, or if you have had aspirin or other NSAIDs stomach bleeding together with Celebrex. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Celebrex if you have the following:
Before starting the treatment with Celebrex, your doctor may ask you to make a medical diagnosis, monitor your progress and if any of the following apply to you:
Celebrex should be taken with food at a fixed time(s) to reduce stomach irritation. Do not skip doses or stop taking the medicine without consulting your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
