PITTSBURGH, June 13, 2013 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ -- AstraZeneca today announced that the U. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Celebrex (celecoxib) for the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea, a condition that is often seen in older patients in conjunction with surgery.
"Today's approval marks an important step in our program to provide safe and effective treatment for patients with primary dysmenorrhea who cannot or do not respond to traditional surgical options," said Gary D. Lechleiter, M. D., vice president of drug development, AstraZeneca. "This approval underscores our commitment to advancing healthcare alternatives for patients with primary dysmenorrhea."
The approval was based on results of a study that was conducted in approximately 12,000 patients with dysmenorrhea and showed that Celebrex was associated with an overall increased risk of recurrence of dysmenorrhea in older patients. In the patients who received the treatment, Celebrex had a greater percentage of patients who developed a recurrence rate of ≥ 50 percent. In the Celebrex-treated patients, the recurrence rate was 50.6 percent, compared to 35.4 percent for the Celex-treated patients.
In addition, the results of the study support the FDA's commitment to advancing the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea that is associated with decreased morbidity and mortality. The Celebrex study is consistent with other recent studies in which the rate of recurrence of dysmenorrhea increased with the use of Celebrex in older patients.

I know how frustrating it can be, but there’s no guarantee that it will work for everyone.”While Celebrex is an effective treatment for pain and inflammation, it also can cause some side effects. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal, such as diarrhea, and allergic reactions. These reactions can be severe and it can be difficult to track down a treatment. There are (in my case, Nurx) (generic Celebrex) (blood thinners) and (heart medication). Both of these medications are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS) that also help reduce pain. As a result, people with heart conditions commonly experience gastrointestinal symptoms like gas, diarrhea, and acid.
I’ve taken Celebrex (Celecoxib) (blood thinners) and (Heart Meds) (heart medication) and have had several severe gastrointestinal (GI) side effects. My provider will let us know how it goes if you’re unable to swallow Celebrex (Celecoxib) (blood thinners).
